The treatise says: The gate of the mind as arising and ceasing has ten kinds of names. What are the ten? First is called the Gate of the Receptacle Consciousness, because it holds and maintains all defiled and pure dharmas; second is called the Gate of the Tathāgatagarbha, because it conceals the substance of the Tathāgata's dharmakāya; third is called the Gate of Activation, because it continuously operates; fourth is called the Gate of Severance and Bondage, because it has antidotes and obstructions; fifth is called the Gate of Going and Coming, because it has higher and lower; sixth is called the Gate of Many Distinct Characteristics, because defiled and pure dharmas exceed the sands of the Ganges; seventh is called the Gate of the World, because the four characteristics operate together; eighth is called the Gate of Transmigration and Cessation, because it is fully endowed with saṃsāra and nirvāṇa; ninth is called the Gate of Mutual Dependence and Co-establishment, because no dharma establishes itself; tenth is called the Gate of Arising and Ceasing, because it displays the characteristic of impermanence. These are called the ten. These ten names fully subsume the names of the various distinct dharma gates throughout all dharmapiṭakas of the Buddhas.
