The gate of downward turning has been explained; next, the gate of upward turning is explained. If one wishes to establish this gate of upward turning, one should further set forth the words of the sūtra text. Namely, in the King of Laṅkā Sūtra, it is spoken thus: At that time, the World-Honoured One addressed the great assembly, saying: "O sons of the Buddha! I recall the past: at the time of going out, I came to rely on the other; at the time of entering, the other came to rely on me." What meaning does this sūtra passage clarify? It shows the two turnings. How does it show this? "At the time of going out, I came to rely on the other" is the downward turning. "At the time of entering, the other came to rely on me" is the upward turning. What is the meaning of this? "I" refers to the Buddha of the tathāgatagarbha, the original awakening of tathatā; "came" has the meaning of receiving perfuming; "rely on the other" means turning away from one's own original awakening to rely on the other of ignorance. Because the explanation is made relying on this sūtra passage, it is therefore said that what is neither arising nor ceasing combining with arising and ceasing is the gate of downward turning. If one wishes to establish the gate of upward turning, one may say that arising and ceasing combines with what is neither arising nor ceasing. For this reason, these words are preserved in the profound theoretical treatise. Bodhisattva Aśvaghoṣa's original āśaya has always been distinct and clear in its sequence, merely indicating by mentioning one to encompass the other; therefore there is no fault of omission. The meaning of the gate of upward turning will naturally become clear in the section on antidotes. The gate of upward turning has been explained; next, the gate of comprehensive subsumption and establishment is explained. How many are the distinctions of the consciousnesses in number? In which sūtras are how many kinds of consciousnesses respectively spoken? A verse says:
