The basic [text] states: "What is meant by 'non-awakening' is that because one does not truly know the oneness of the dharma of tathatā, the non-awakened mind arises and thoughts exist. Thoughts have no self-characteristic and are not separate from original awakening. Just as a lost person becomes confused based on the directions, but if separated from the directions, there is no confusion; sentient beings are also like this: they are confused based on awakening, and if separated from the nature of awakening, there is no non-awakening. Because the deluded mind of non-awakening exists, one can understand names and meanings, and true awakening is spoken for its sake. If separated from the mind of non-awakening, there is no self-characteristic of true awakening that can be spoken."
