Having explained the section revealing the great meaning of its own characteristics, next I will explain the section revealing the great meaning of its own function. Among these, there are six sections; one should carefully observe them in their proper order. Regarding the section on inexhaustible original vows, it is because the pure saṃnāha-āśaya is vast, complete, and boundless. That is to say, through limitless, boundless, inconceivable, and immeasurable kalpas [as numerous as] dust motes, all Tathāgatas raise an ocean of great compassionate minds [as numerous as] the dust motes of the worlds in the ten directions, cultivate an ocean of great complete causes [as numerous as] the dust motes of the worlds in the ten directions, gather an ocean of all sentient beings [as numerous as] the dust motes of the worlds in the ten directions, establish an ocean of vast vows [as numerous as] the dust motes of the worlds in the ten directions, and accomplish an ocean of great sovereign fruits [as numerous as] the dust motes of the worlds in the ten directions. Why is this? Because they truly know the meaning of identical, undifferentiated continuity. Just as the original text says: "Furthermore, regarding the function of tathatā: all Buddhas and Tathāgatas, originally in the causal stage, gave rise to great compassion, cultivated the pāramitās, gathered and transformed sentient beings, and established great vows, wishing to completely liberate the realm of sentient beings to the utmost, without limiting the number of kalpas and exhausting the future, because they take all sentient beings as their own bodies."
