"Having spoken this verse, it immediately passed away, and later attaining a human body, became my disciple. At that time, we mutually made vows and bound ourselves, making such a vow: 'If I realize the unexcelled path, I shall proclaim ninety lakṣas of broad sūtras to benefit sentient beings whose inclination is toward the broad, and proclaim ten lakṣas of brief sūtras to benefit sentient beings whose inclination is toward dhāraṇī.' Then my disciple made this vow: 'After my teacher's passing, I shall compose ninety broad upadeśas to benefit sentient beings whose inclination is toward the broad, and compose ten brief upadeśas to benefit sentient beings whose inclination is toward dhāraṇī.' Due to this cause and condition, I now proclaim the ocean of sūtras. Due to this cause and condition, after my parinirvāṇa, my disciple now composes treatises and teachings."
