The general presentation has been explained; next is the specific presentation. Within this section there are two gates. What are the two? First, not having entered the correct stage; second, having already entered the correct stage. What is meant by not having entered the correct stage? It refers to the ordinary persons of the ten faiths, all of the two vehicles, and the bodhisattvas of the three grades of worthies, etc., who have not yet attained fundamental non-conceptual cognition, have not yet realized subsequent cognition, and have not yet realized tathatā-principle. As the basic text states: 'This perfume of essence and function also has two kinds. What are the two? First, non-conjunction: ordinary persons, the two vehicles, and newly aspired bodhisattvas, etc., who rely on the power of faith to cultivate by means of the perfume of mind and mental consciousness; because they have not yet attained the non-conceptual mind to conjoin with the essence, and have not yet attained spontaneous activity in practice to conjoin with the function.' What is meant by having already entered the correct stage? It refers to the bodhisattvas of the ten grounds, who internally attain fundamental cognition and externally attain subsequent cognition, whose one-portion cognitive function is equal to that of the Tathāgata, and who solely by the power of original perfume cultivate naturally, increasing tathatā and capable of extinguishing avidyā. As the basic text states: 'Second, conjunction: dharmakāya bodhisattvas who have attained the non-conceptual mind and conjoin with the essence of all Buddhas, attaining spontaneous activity in practice to conjoin with the cognitive function, cultivating naturally and perfuming tathatā solely reliant upon the power of the Dharma, extinguishing avidyā.'
