Question: In places there are pure and impure, yet without indeterminacy only one is stated; times differ in different directions, so what is to prevent also stating it definitively? An ordinary person sees an impure place, while knowing that the noble one dwells in a pure land. Why not separately discuss the speaking of this time, so that by analogy to the rest one could know the distinct time?
Answer: It may be a single moment or many kalpas and cannot be definitively stated; since it cannot be understood by analogy, for this reason it simply states 'at one time' in a general aspect. As for the extension and compression of kalpa measures: either through mere-consciousness it is compressed or extended; or through the imagined nature both are eliminated; or through the dependent nature it is a deluded phenomenon; or through the true nature it is sameness; or through noble power it is empowered—hence there is extension and compression. There is no need for doubt; it should be explained by drawing inferences from the principle.
