Commentary: Among these twelve [links of] dependent origination, ignorance has delusion as its substance; it is the affliction that generates karma. Formations comprise the three karmas, namely non-meritorious, meritorious, and immovable karma. Both of these [links] encompass active manifestations and seeds. Consciousness is only the fundamental consciousness. Name-and-form encompasses the five aggregates. The six sense bases are only the six sense faculties. The two dharmas of contact and feeling are exclusively of the nature of maturation, taking their own substance as essence. The five from the link of consciousness downward are exclusively seeds. Craving is exclusively greedy love taking this as its own nature; grasping takes all afflictions as its nature. Both of these also encompass active manifestations and seeds. Existence collectively takes six links as its substance; that is to say, the two—craving and grasping—moisten them. The six links from prior formations downward are made to manifest as future fruits, and the subsequent generation of the fruit is called 'existence'. Existence is solely seeds. From the state of the intermediate existence up to the state of fundamental existence prior to degeneration and change, all five aggregates are called the link of birth. From the state of degeneration and change up to the end of life, all five aggregates are called aging-and-death. That is to say, conditioned by ignorance, good and bad formations are generated and perfume the fundamental consciousness; after becoming associated with the five [links] beginning with consciousness, craving and grasping jointly moisten them; that these former six links can produce future fruits is named 'existence'; the arising of the characteristics of the destinies is named 'birth'; degeneration, change, and the end of life are named 'death'. The substances of the twelve links of existence are exclusively with effluents, as explained in detail in the Vijñaptimātratā[-siddhi] and other [texts].
