The commentary states: This is the second section, the supreme treasury dharma gate of the sustaining of sentient beings, because cultivating contemplative illumination universally takes all persons and phenomena as wholesome objects. Within the text there are three [parts]; this is the first, marking the name of the expounded dharma gate. Within it there are again two: first, stating the mark relied upon; later, stating its name. As for 'the dharma of the sustaining treasury': 'abiding' (zhu) means staying, meaning that beginningless sentient beings all abide relying upon the tathāgatagarbha and so forth; or, this [tathāgatagarbha] initially abides within all sentient beings. 'Sustaining' (chi) means maintaining, meaning that the tathāgatagarbha and so forth sustains sentient beings, serving as the basis of sentient beings, and is also able to sustain all the seeds of all the Buddha's dharmas. As for 'the dharma of the treasury': it means that within the unconditioned, the tathāgatagarbha contains boundless Buddha-merits; therefore it is named a 'treasury'. 'The sustaining and pervasion of all sentient beings': it means that the tathāgatagarbha pervades, relies upon, and abides within the body and mind of sentient beings, and is able to sustain all merits of the Buddha's dharmas; this is the supreme jewel treasury of all. The teaching that explains this is called a 'dharma gate'. The meaning of tathāgatagarbha is the fundamental name; therefore other [terms] like the vajragarbha are not mentioned.
