Commentary: This is the fourth: all sentient beings are treasuries of wondrous karma. "Wondrous karma" refers to all the wholesome threefold karma possessed by bodhisattvas; the meaning of "treasury" is the same as before. All sentient beings are storehouses for the wondrous karma of bodhisattvas. When bodhisattvas wish to initiate wholesome deeds, they do so entirely for the sake of sentient beings, either to realize the intrinsic nature of those sentient beings, or wishing to extirpate their suffering and affliction in saṃsāra and so initiate active preparations; thus, sentient beings are that upon which active preparations rely. That upon which one relies is the treasury, because wondrous karma arises from sentient beings. Of the four kinds set forth above, the first treats the essence of phenomena, because it discusses the original treasury; the second treats the function of phenomena, because it destroys saṃsāra; the third treats the basis of teaching, because it is the root of non-perversion; the fourth treats the basis of virtues, because it is the root of all virtues. If one fails to understand [this], it is contrary to this.
