The commentary says: Because they subdue the four Māras and transcend the three realms, attaining the fruit of the exalted station, they are universally great in the three realms. Because they are not destroyed by the four Māras of saṃsāra, they are called 'mastery.' Briefly stated, mastery has ten kinds: life mastery, mind mastery, and requisite mastery—these three are due to the fulfillment of the perfection of giving; karma mastery and birth mastery are due to the fulfillment of the perfection of discipline; resolve mastery is due to the fulfillment of the perfection of patience; aspiration mastery is due to the fulfillment of the perfection of vigor; supernormal power mastery is due to the fulfillment of the perfection of meditative concentration; knowledge mastery and dharma mastery are due to the fulfillment of the perfection of wisdom—as explained in the ninth fascicle of the Mahāyānasaṃgraha and other texts. Stated according to the main principle, these ten masteries are called the fruit of self-benefit; when realized, they also possess distinct stages, so the Buddha's mastery is universally great throughout the three realms. Thus a verse says: 'In heaven and earth, in this realm, the abode of Vaiśravaṇa, / The Palace of Śakra, the heavenly realms, in the ten directions there is none; / The Great Hero, Bull King, the Great Śramaṇa, / Searching the earth, mountains, and forests, everywhere there is none his equal.' Therefore the Buddha, the World-Honoured One, is universally great in the three realms. In brief, with the pure dharmadhātu, the great mirror-like wisdom, the wisdom of equality, the wisdom of subtle contemplation, and the wisdom of accomplishing actions, and the two adornments of merit and wisdom, it is supreme.
