Commentary: This one dharma gate is the six elements that constitute a sentient being. The four great elements can be known. What is called 'space' is the form of the space element within the internal body. 'Consciousness' refers to the eight consciousnesses. Here, only three kinds of bases are taught: as the basis of form, only the four great elements are taught. As the basis of movement, the space element is taught, for without this form of the space element within the internal body, movement would be impossible. As the basis of mental factors, only consciousness is taught. Discussing their roots, only the six faculties are mentioned: because they form an accumulated shape, the four great elements are taught; because they can give rise to discrimination, consciousness is taught; and because they have activities such as coming, going, and moving, they are spoken of as empty and quiescent, neither increasing nor decreasing.
