The Praise states: This is the praise of virtue. In accordance with the sūtras there are ten dharma-practices, but here only six dharma-practices are spoken of: first, hearing; second, faithful understanding; third, upholding; fourth, reading; fifth, reciting; and sixth, cultivating. From this day forward, when first embarking on the ten dharma-practices, until in the future sitting on the bodhi-seat and attaining buddhahood, even if one commits all extremely grave evil karma—meaning wrong view among views, mental action among karmas, and causing a schism in the Sangha among the cardinal sins, though committing them all—by virtue of understanding, one will not be defiled by them, and will be able to transcend all unfortunate destinies. By the great spiritual authority of hearing the sūtra, practicing, and so forth, these evil karmas, once done, do not increase, so one does not fall into the three unfortunate destinies and so forth, and will swiftly realize unsurpassed bodhi. Calculating this merit, it should be the same as before, but to separately praise the superior function of the sūtra, they are expounded distinctly.
