The ten superior virtues are: 1. Drawing close to good friends (kalyāṇamitra). This means being united in sentiment and purpose; though physically distant, one is called close, but if one is not united and harmonious, though physically close, they are not called a good friend. Therefore, the *Nirvāṇa [Sūtra]* says: a good friend is one who speaks according to the Dharma and acts according to what they say; that is, they themselves do not kill, and teach others not to kill, up to themselves not holding wrong views and teaching others not to hold wrong views, which is called acting according to what they say. Furthermore, a good friend is like the moon from its first day to the fifteenth day, gradually becoming more complete and superior. 2. Making offerings to all Buddhas. This means performing the ten kinds of offerings, whether in their presence or not in their presence, and so on. 3. Cultivating and accumulating roots of wholesomeness. This means that in whatever one does, one gathers what is wholesome together. 4. Aspiring to seek superior dharmas. This means delighting in performing superior wholesome deeds, delighting in hearing superior dharmas, and the like. 5. The mind being constantly gentle and compliant. This means that one's nature is not stubborn or fierce, just like a fine horse. 6. Being able to endure when encountering suffering. This means not shrinking from the sufferings of cold, heat, and the like for the sake of bodhi. 7. Loving-kindness and compassion being profound and sincere. This means rescuing and delivering all. 8. A profound mind of equanimity. This means having no duality toward enemies and friends, treating favorable and adverse alike. 9. Faith and delight in the Mahāyāna. 10. Seeking the wisdom of the Buddha. The *Lotus Sūtra* has five, where it says: 'Moreover, the Buddha's sons have pure minds, / Are gentle, compliant, and also of sharp faculties; / In the presence of immeasurable Buddhas, / They practice the deep and wondrous path.'
