次應發心，如是發願，願我決定當證無上正等菩提，能作有情一切義利。或隨意樂諸佛之名，如釋迦佛初發希願，如《俱舍頌》「於三無數劫，逆次逢勝觀，燃燈、寶髻佛，初釋迦牟尼佛」。無著菩薩由此說言，「清淨增上力，堅固心勝進，名菩薩初修，無數三大劫」。先起信、精進、念、定、慧根，降伏障染，次發大願，常逢善友以為勝緣，雖遇惡友方便沮壞，終不棄捨大菩提心，所修善法運運增長，以不退屈而為策發，齊是名為最初修行。

Next, one should generate the mind and make such a vow: 'May I definitely realize unsurpassed, complete, perfect enlightenment and be able to accomplish all benefit and welfare for sentient beings.' Or, in accordance with one's inclination toward the names of various Buddhas, just as Śākyamuni Buddha initially made his aspiration, as stated in the verse of the *Kośa*: 'Throughout three incalculable kalpas, / In reverse order he met Vipaśyin, / Dīpaṃkara, Ratnacūḍa, / And the initial Śākyamuni Buddha.' Asaṅga Bodhisattva, on this basis, said: 'With the power of pure increase, / Firm mind, and superior progress, / It is called a bodhisattva's initial cultivation / Over three great incalculable kalpas.' One first gives rise to the roots of faith, diligence, mindfulness, concentration, and wisdom, subdues obstacles and defilements, then makes great vows, constantly encountering good friends as superior conditions, and even if encountering evil friends who employ expedients to obstruct and ruin them, one never abandons the great bodhicitta; the wholesome dharmas cultivated increase continuously, being stimulated by not falling back—this much is called the initial practice.
