The Commentary says: According to Vasubandhu's explanation, this refutes the second doubt. In this, first is the question, next the reply. Speaking of Dīpaṃkara (Ran-deng), this means Dingguang. That is, when Śākyamuni Buddha in the past was a bodhisattva, his seventh bhūmi was nearly complete; at that time as the young ascetic māṇava, hearing that Dīpaṃkara Buddha was about to enter the city, he purchased flowers from a woman to scatter over the Buddha, and also to manifest his deep reverence, he spread his hair over the mud; at that time the Buddha preached the Dharma for him, and he immediately entered the eighth bhūmi, the beginning of the third asaṃkhyeya [kalpa]. The flower-selling woman, hearing that he was making an offering to the Buddha, did not take his money and joined in the same vow; following from this, they were constantly husband and wife, acting as a spiritual friend—this was Yaśodharā.
