The commentary states: Vasubandhu's commentary says this is the third passage, concerning doubt, in the second section. That is, there is again a doubt: "Previously it was said that the mind's abiding is inverted. If so, then merit is also inverted. If it is inverted, how can it be called a wholesome dharma?" To sever this doubt, it shows that although the mind's abiding is inverted, the merit practiced is not, because it is the root of the Buddha's cognition; when one practices giving, one does not cling to one's own body and so forth, but merely seeks unexcelled bodhi, and therefore the virtue is exceedingly great. Within this, first the Buddha asks, next Subhūti answers, and later the Tathāgata establishes it. This is the first. That is, if one takes the seven treasures and gives them for the sake of seeking prajñā, hearing, cultivating, and studying it, one will achieve Buddhahood, and therefore the merit is exceedingly great.
