2.285

無著云，「莫作是念」者，勸令勿生前念，以相為因而得法身。何以故？如來不以具足相為因得菩提故。故論云，以相是色性故，謂要以智為因，方得菩提，非用相也，相是色故。

Asaṅga says: “Do not entertain this thought” is an exhortation not to give rise to the preceding thought—namely, attaining the dharmakāya by taking marks as the cause. Why is this? Because the Tathāgata does not attain bodhi by taking the perfection of marks as the cause. Hence the commentary says that because marks are material in nature, one must take wisdom as the cause to only then attain bodhi, and not use marks, because marks are matter.
