2.287

述曰，世親云，此第二明因果不失也。於中初、述彼心，次、勸勿念，後、釋所以，此初也。謂有念曰不依福德得大菩提者，是則福德無，果報亦無，若爾，發菩提心者便說諸法斷滅也，以無福德因及果故。

The commentary states: Vasubandhu says: This is the second [passage], clarifying that cause and fruit are not lost. Within this, first, it cites their thought; next, it exhorts them not to think this; finally, it explains the reason; this is the first. That is, someone thinks: if one does not attain great bodhi based on merit, then merit does not exist, and retribution also does not exist; if so, one who gives rise to the bodhicitta would speak of the annihilation of all dharmas, because there would be no cause or fruit of merit.
