1.16

—For this book, I searched for and obtained six copies in all. Three of them are ancient copies from the Southern Capital [Nara], and that handed down through generations of head instructors of Kōfuku-ji is moreover the most reliable among them. Therefore, I now take this as the primary text, collating other copies against it. Where readings are equally possible, both are preserved; furthermore, where a reading is doubtful but all copies agree, I tentatively follow the original text, not daring to judge arbitrarily—and I have placed notes in the upper margin, awaiting further good copies.
