Master Gei of Echizen once lamented this, wishing to carve the printing blocks and circulate it in the world. He searched in all quarters and obtained five copies. After he had collated and corrected them among each other, he considered that our Kōfuku[-ji] had a still better copy; in the summer of the guiyou year [1813], he came to consult me. I praised his aspiration and brought out a copy to show him—namely, that handed down through successive generations of head instructors. Master Gei was overjoyed, took it, and went away. Coming to the end of autumn, he returned to announce that his collation was completed, and begged me for an inscription. I deeply feared placing my vulgar words at the head of an ancestral classic, an offense of presumption from which I could not escape, so I firmly declined and did not dare.
