The commentary states: This is the second section, praising, confirming, and promising to explain, in which there are three parts: first, praising; second, confirming; third, promising to explain. "Praising" refers to 'Excellent!': if Subhūti had been only slightly in accord with principle, the Buddha would merely have confirmed it, not necessarily praising him repeatedly; because his question was exceedingly profound and vast, the Buddha repeatedly praised him: 'Excellent, excellent!'. "Confirming" means confirming and endorsing his words. "Promising to explain" means intending to expound it. "Attentively" (dì) means carefully; causing him to listen, examine, and receive it carefully, hence he says 'listen attentively'. Thus a sūtra says: 'A listener looks straight ahead as if hungry or thirsty, enters into the meaning of the words with single-mindedness, and leaps with joy to hear the Dharma with a mind of compassion and joy—only for such a person should one speak.'
