Asaṅga says: This is the third passage within [the section on] apprehending the dharmakāya, which resolves external objections. The commentary says: “If so, although the Tathāgata should not be seen by means of the perfection of marks, he should attain anuttarā samyaksambodhi with perfection as the cause.” In order to be free from this attachment, it clarifies that the perfection of marks is not itself the essence of bodhi, nor does one take the perfection of marks as the cause, because marks are material in nature (rūpatva). Within this there are two parts: first, anticipating and citing their thought; second, exhorting them to eliminate the thought; this is the first. That is, it cites their thought saying that the dharmakāya Tathāgata attains it taking the perfection of marks as the cause. One should omit the word “not” (不); upon checking the *Vajracchedikā* and the Bhagavat’s text, both lack the word “not”.
