Within the former, there are three: First is clarifying the capacity for patience, which means comprehending the selflessness of dharmas, as the sūtra says: "The Tathāgata speaks of kṣāntipāramitā." Second is clarifying the lakṣaṇa of patience, which means that when others act malevolently toward oneself, because there is no lakṣaṇa of self and so on, one does not give rise to notions of anger, nor does one give rise to notions of existence regarding kṣāntipāramitā, nor does one give rise to notions of non-existence regarding what is not pāramitā, as the sūtra says: "Just as in the past when King Kali dismembered my body, at that time I had no lakṣaṇa of self, and so on." Third is the varieties of patience, meaning patience with extreme suffering and patience with continuous suffering, as the sūtra says: "Just as in the past when King Kali dismembered my body," and says: "I recall that in the past, for five hundred lifetimes, I was the hermit Kṣāntivādin," and so forth.
