Within this, the text has five [sections], which show that being in accord with the Dharma possesses five kinds of superior merit: first, being remembered and drawn near to by the Tathāgata, as in the sūtra passage: 'receiving, upholding, reading, reciting, and practicing, they are known by the Tathāgata with the Buddha’s wisdom,' and so forth; second, embracing merit, as in the sūtra passage: 'they will all attain and accomplish an immeasurable and boundless accumulation of merit,' and so forth; third, praising the Dharma and its practice, as in the sūtra passage: 'in brief, this sūtra possesses inconceivable,' and so forth; fourth, receiving offerings from devas and others, as in the sūtra passage: 'wherever this sūtra is located,' and so forth; fifth, eliminating transgressions, as in the sūtra passage: 'if someone who receives, upholds, reads, and recites this sūtra is despised by others,' up to 'will attain,' and so forth. This, then, is the first text. That is to say, those who receive, uphold, read, and recite this sūtra provide the true cause for the direct recompense of bodhi; it is the offering of true Dharma, which no offering of mundane wealth and jewels to the Tathāgatas can equal. Because of this, the Tathāgata constantly knows such persons with Buddha-wisdom, constantly sees such persons with the Buddha-eye, and draws near to and remembers them.
