Commentary: Vasubandhu explains: this adduces facts to draw a comparison. Within it, first, it shows that giving one's life is exceedingly great; second, it reveals that the merit of having faith in the sūtra is superior. Renouncing one's body at the three periods of the day is a hypothetical assumption. 'With faithful mind and does not oppose it' means that if a person hears this scripture, even though they have not yet been able to receive, uphold, read, and recite it, if they merely generate pure faith and rejoice in its merit, by comparison, their merit surpasses the former. Why is this so? It is because, although one renounces one's body and life within saṃsāra, in the end one cannot thereby accord with the dharmakāya of bodhi; yet if one generates faith for a single lifetime, even though one has not yet produced the understanding of wisdom, nevertheless, because of that faith, one consequently listens, gives rise to and grows wisdom, and is certain to attain Buddhahood. Therefore, that merit is immense, because a mind of compliance has already arisen.
