Commentary: This is based on Vasubandhu's fifth text, the swift realization of the Buddha's Dharma of bodhi. Within it, first, it adduces the merit he attained himself; second, it compares the virtue of others receiving and upholding it. This is the first. An asaṃkhyeya kalpa: the Small Vehicle teaching says that from one to ten, ten tens make a hundred, ten hundreds make a thousand, ten thousands make a myriad, and ten myriads make a koṭi; accumulating numbers through sixty such stages is called one asaṃkhyeya. Now the Great Vehicle, following the Avataṃsaka, accumulates numbers through one hundred and twenty stages to make one asaṃkhyeya, continuing with myriad myriads making a koṭi, and koṭi koṭis making a trillion, and so on.
