The meaning here is that from beginningless time, with minds bent on killing, stealing, and so forth toward all sentient beings, performing karma of killing, stealing, and the like, becoming their enemies and causing them harm—yet upon once hearing or once reading this sūtra, generating the bodhicitta, they permanently eliminate enmity and harm, forever having no thoughts of killing or stealing toward all sentient beings, acting as father and mother to all sentient beings, ferrying them across and instructing them, constantly serving as an excellent friend through expedient means; joining with them as relatives while practicing filial piety and righteousness; manifesting as friends while practicing consummate trust; manifesting as ministers and aides while possessing loyalty and goodness; manifesting as rulers while employing expedient means to comfort and rescue them; up to manifesting as men, women, or the lowly. If becoming an elder, they are the most venerable among elders, as extensively explained regarding their conduct in the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa; in the future they will achieve buddhahood with inexhaustible merit, able to exhaust the future in transforming categories of sentient beings. Because such vast and boundless merit is generated merely through hearing [this sūtra], therefore, were it to be spoken of fully, foolish ordinary beings lacking wisdom might, upon hearing it, become frenzied or suspicious. 'Frenzied in mind' means that either upon hearing the sūtra they do not believe it and instead give rise to hatred and slander because of being frenzied; or, due to their disbelief, in the future they will incur the karmic result of madness.
