Commentary: This is the second passage. That is to say, the sūtra expresses the meaning of the signless (animitta), and those who uphold it will obtain the great fruit of bodhi; since the doctrinal meaning is itself difficult to measure, the retribution of its fruit is likewise difficult to conceive. Therefore, a sūtra says that there are three things which are fine when concealed but bad when exposed: foolish people, the scriptures of non-Buddhists, and women; and there are three things which are fine when exposed but bad when concealed: wise people, the scriptures of the Buddha's Dharma, and the sun and moon. That is, before this prajñā is unrolled, it is no different from external texts; but once unrolled, whether expounded or read, it can destroy hundreds of thousands of sinful obstacles of sentient beings and enable them to attain bodhi. Therefore, the merit of those who receive and uphold it is exceedingly great—even relinquishing many bodies and lives cannot compare to it.
