Commentary: Vasubandhu says that this is the second cycle of exposition. That is to say, previously, those who had not yet understood generating the mind were taught to proceed and generate it; those who had not yet understood practice were taught to practice; and those who had not yet been able to subdue and sever the obstacles were taught how to subdue them completely. Now, this cycle is for bodhisattvas who have already generated the mind, yet say, 'I am able to generate the mind,' up to the third [group], those who have already severed the obstacles, yet say, 'I am able to sever them.' Because of generating such conceptual discrimination, it obstructs bodhi. Conceptual discrimination refers to the cognitive obstacle (jñeyāvaraṇa), which directly obstructs the non-abiding path. That is, when generating the mind, practicing, and so forth, if one implicitly accords with the true reality through non-conceptual wisdom without generating discrimination and saying 'I am able to do so,' this is called the non-abiding path, because one abides neither in saṃsāra nor in nirvāṇa. If there is discrimination, then it is not realization, and hence it is called an obstacle.
