The Buddha told Subhūti: "Those good men and good women who generate the mind for anuttarā samyaksaṃbodhi should give rise to such a mind: 'I must bring all sentient beings to final nirvāṇa. Yet when all sentient beings have been brought to final nirvāṇa, not a single sentient being has in reality been brought to final nirvāṇa.' Why is this? Subhūti! If a bodhisattva has the mark of a self, the mark of a person, the mark of a sentient being, or the mark of a soul, then they are not a bodhisattva."
