As for 'Vajra', in Sanskrit it is vajra, which is the pestle held by a mighty warrior and is this jewel. It is the hardest among metals, hence it is called vajra. Śakra possesses it; those of little merit find it hard to see. It is extremely hard and extremely sharp, serving as a metaphor for prajñā: nothing can destroy it, yet it can crush and destroy myriad things. The Nirvāṇa Sūtra says: 'Just like vajra, which none can destroy, yet it can crush and destroy all things.' Asaṅga says: 'Vajra is hard to destroy.' He also says: 'Vajra is able to cut.' He also says: 'Vajra is so called because it is fine and firm.
