二、明建立之意。意有三焉：一、斷疑故。謂結集時，阿難昇座欲宣佛法，感得自身相好如佛，眾起三疑：一、疑佛重起說法，二、疑他方佛來，三、疑阿難成佛，故說此言，三疑頓斷。二、息諍故。若不推從佛聞，言自製作，則諍論起。三、異邪故。不同外道經初云「阿憂」等。

2. Clarifying the intent of its establishment. The intent has three aspects: First, to sever doubts. At the time of the council, when Ānanda ascended the seat wishing to proclaim the Buddha's Dharma, his own body manifested marks and signs like the Buddha's, and the assembly gave rise to three doubts: 1. Doubting whether the Buddha had arisen again to expound the Dharma; 2. Doubting whether a Buddha from another realm had arrived; 3. Doubting whether Ānanda had attained Buddhahood. Therefore, by uttering these words, the three doubts were severed at once. Second, to put an end to disputes. If he did not attribute it to having heard it from the Buddha, but claimed to have composed it himself, disputes would arise. Third, to differentiate from heterodox teachings, not being like heterodox sūtras that begin with words such as 'oṃ'.
