《大般若》說：「天帝不在，諸天若來，但見空座，盡皆作禮，供養而去。」窣堵波，此云高顯。塔者，邊國訛語，廟藐也，於塔中安佛形藐。

The *Large Prajñāpāramitā* says: "When the Lord of the Devas is absent, if the gods come and see only the empty seat, all pay homage, make offerings, and depart." *Stūpa*, here rendered as 'high and prominent'. *Ta* is a dialect error of the frontier regions. *Miao* (shrine) means 'form' (*miao*): within the stūpa, the Buddha's physical form is enshrined.
