The commentary says: "The merit of giving treasures is a cause of afflictions, because it can accomplish matters of affliction. Earth dust is indeterminate and not a cause of afflictions; hence dust is superior and generosity is inferior." *Dayun* says: "Therefore, motes of earth dust are not the dust of afflictions such as greed; they are named indeterminate earth dust." The Tathāgata preaches that the three thousand worlds are not causes of defilement by afflictions; worlds are named earth dust. If an indeterminate world is so, then worlds are dust, and because of dust, afflictions do not arise. Generosity is the cause of merit, and merit produces afflictions.
