Fourth, the master. Stated fully, [he is called] 'Buddha'; here translated as 'the Awakened One.' The Awakening of Faith says: 'What is meant by "awakening" is that the essence of the mind is free from thought. That which is free from the characteristics of thought is equal to the realm of empty space; this is the Tathāgata's universal dharmakāya.' Thus, by freedom from thought one is called 'Buddha.' However, awakening has three meanings: first, self-awakening, which is awakening to the knowledge that one's own mind is originally without arising and ceasing; second, awakening others, which is awakening to the fact that all dharmas are nothing other than tathatā; third, complete awakening, which is called 'complete' because the principle of the two awakenings is perfected. Therefore, one knows that if there is thought, one is not called awakened. The Awakening of Faith says: 'All sentient beings are not called awakened, because from beginningless time thought has succeeded thought without cease, and they have never been free from thought.' It also says: 'If there are sentient beings who can contemplate freedom from thought, then they are heading toward the Buddha's wisdom.'
