Sixth, the assembly. 'Together with' means 'along with' and 'and.' 'Great' means their renown was elevated and their virtue manifest. Bhikṣu is Sanskrit, containing three meanings here, so the Sanskrit is retained untranslated: first, terrifying Māra; second, mendicant; third, pure precepts. 'Assembly' means harmony in principle and harmony in events. As for 'twelve hundred and fifty,' when the Buddha first attained the Way, he delivered five people including Kauṇḍinya; next he delivered the three Kāśyapa brothers together with their disciples, totaling one thousand; next he delivered Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana each with one hundred disciples; next he delivered fifty people including the son of the elder Yaśas. The sūtra gives the round number, therefore reducing it by five people. This was the assembly that constantly followed him, and thus its number is listed specifically; it is not that there were no other assemblies, but merely that they were concealed rather than revealed. 'Together' means at one time and in one place.
