Marks are conditioned, being subject to arising, abiding, changing, and ceasing; the Buddha's essence is different from this, and therefore they are not bodily marks. The verse says: '"Because the three marks are of different essence" means the Buddha's essence is different from the three conditioned marks.' The two marks of abiding and changing are both in the present, so they are combined into one; if finely differentiated, there are four. Thus the Vijñaptimātra says: 'Arising indicates that this dharma was not previously existent; ceasing indicates that this dharma is non-existent later; changing indicates that this dharma is not static; abiding indicates that this dharma temporarily has function.'
