From "Muni" downward is the Buddha. The Sanskrit pronunciation is Śākyamuni; here this is translated as "Able in Benevolence, Silent." Because he is able in benevolence, he does not abide in nirvāṇa; because he is silent, he does not abide in saṃsāra. Furthermore, "silent" means manifesting characteristics while being without characteristics; "speechless" means showing exposition while being without exposition—this is the response body that is identical to reality. As for the "Great Awakened One," awakening is itself the Buddha. "Great" distinguishes him from other nobles: although other nobles are awakened, they are not yet called "great"—the partial awakening of the two vehicles and the gradual awakening of bodhisattvas are both not great. Only the Buddha, the Tathāgata, is once awakened and eternally awakened, with nothing left unawakened; like awakening from a great dream, like a lotus blossoming, he towers far beyond the multitude of nobles, and is therefore solely termed "Great." "Honoured One" means that he possesses the above nine titles and is honoured by all beings, as will be distinguished in detail below.
