The single line from "Subtly aiding this commentary" downward is a prayer to benefit sentient beings. "Subtle" means dark [unseen], and "aid" means assistance. "What is set forth" is this very commentary. "Accord" means to harmonize. "Multitude of capacities" means all sentient beings. Now, aid and protection are of two kinds: first, manifest aid, which means manifesting a physical body to expound the Dharma, involving seeing and hearing; second, unseen aid, which means only obtaining the power of wisdom without seeing or hearing anything. Between the two, here he seeks only unseen aid. Because composing a commentary to explain a sūtra relies solely on the power of wisdom, if one only obtains unseen assistance, there is no need for seeing and hearing. For this sūtra says: "If one sees me by form or seeks me by sound, one is walking a heterodox path." In order to accord with this teaching, he does not seek manifest [aid]. Furthermore, wherever teachings are established, they must accord both with principle and with capacity. Here he does not mention according with principle because the commentary is a treatise that already accords with principle, and also because the commentary's author, between the two benefits, prioritized benefiting others. Here mentioning only according with capacity is a sign of an increase in compassion.
