1.78

曷契如如者。曷何也、契合也。如如者，即上三空之表，本源真性也。二空破執，執喪空明，空病亦空，方契本元真性也。意云：若不先遣遣，即滯有滯空，何能契合真如本性。然此語勢亦是御注序文，彼云：「咸歸遣遣之旨，盡入如如之妙。」

"How could one tally with tathatā?": "How" means what; "tally" means to accord with. "Tathatā" is the original true nature beyond the aforementioned threefold emptiness. The two kinds of emptiness destroy attachments; once attachments are destroyed, emptiness is clarified; and when the affliction of emptiness is also emptied, only then does one tally with the original true nature. The meaning is: if one does not first discard discarding, one will be stranded in existence or stranded in emptiness, so how could one tally with the original nature of tathatā? Furthermore, this phrasing follows the imperial commentary's preface, which states: "All return to the purport of discarding discarding, and completely enter the marvel of tathatā."
