The 'practitioner' is one who cultivates the Great Vehicle. First, one must hear the Dharma and give rise to understanding, which is named wisdom born of hearing. Next, one measures what was heard and evaluates the doctrinal principles, clearly and patiently assenting to stamp one's own mind, which is called wisdom born of reflection. Thereafter, in accordance with what was heard and reflected upon, one practices without transgression, which is named wisdom born of cultivation. The former two are contaminated, and the latter one is uncontaminated; the former are shallow and the latter is deep. Although shallow and deep differ, they are all generally called wisdom; therefore, they are collectively gathered under the name prajñā. It is like a person studying literature, sitting for the examinations, and passing: although the earlier is inferior and the later is superior, they are all the same person. And so forth.
