In the preceding three sentences, each sentence has the dharma above and the metaphor below. The intention is to clarify that afflictions are like a great river, because they are difficult to cross. Saṃsāra is like this shore, because sentient beings abide there. Nirvāṇa is like the other shore, because the Buddhas abide there. Thus wisdom is what is capable of departing, crossing over, and reaching; saṃsāra and the rest are what are departed from, crossed over, and reached. If one wishes to depart from this and reach that, one must cross the midstream. Explaining this according to the four truths, the principle then becomes clear! Knowing suffering is departing from this shore; abandoning the origin and cultivating the path are crossing the midstream; realizing cessation is reaching the other shore. This is explained following the meaning of the Hīnayāna. The sūtra below causes one to enter the Mahāyāna nirvāṇa without remainder, which requires departing from the "this shore" of the two kinds of saṃsāra, boarding the raft of the six perfections, crossing the midstream of the three hindrances, and reaching the "other shore" of the two nirvāṇas.
