證信者。即六成就也。顯說聽時處一一分明以證非謬，令物生信故。發起者。則以事相表示發起正宗法義也。然此二序更有異名，謂：通序、別序。通謂諸經同故。云云。別謂諸經別故。云云。亦謂經後序、經前序。經後序者，佛說之時未有，結集之時方安立故。經前序者，佛先發起方說經故。

"Certifying faith": that is the six fulfillments. Revealing clearly each and every one of the speaker, hearer, time, and place to certify that it is not erroneous, so as to cause sentient beings to give rise to faith. "Initiation": this uses phenomenal actions to manifest and initiate the Dharma principle of the main section. However, these two prefaces also have different names: namely, the general preface and the specific preface. "General" means that all sūtras share it in common, and so forth. "Specific" means that each sūtra is distinct, and so forth. They are also called the post-sūtra preface and the pre-sūtra preface. The post-sūtra preface did not exist when the Buddha preached it, and was only established at the time of compilation. The pre-sūtra preface is what the Buddha initiated first before preaching the sūtra.
