疏建立因者。意明如是等言，因何而立？佛臨下。佛將入滅阿難愁惱，阿泥樓豆告阿難言：「汝是持佛法人，且須裁抑。汝當往彼咨問後事。」阿難曰：「云何後事？」阿泥樓豆曰：「世尊在日，以佛為師，世尊滅後，以誰為師？世尊在日，依世尊住，世尊滅後，依何而住？惡性比丘，佛在之日佛自調伏，佛滅度後，如何調伏？遐益後來理宜結集，一切經首置何等言？」阿難承教一一咨問。今疏影略不載問辭，但書答語也。

The Commentary's "cause of establishment": the intention is to clarify: for what reason were words such as "Thus..." established? "When the Buddha was about to..." Below: When the Buddha was about to enter extinction, Ānanda was distressed and grieved. Aniruddha said to Ānanda: "You are the person who upholds the Buddha's Dharma; you must restrain yourself for now. You should go to him and consult about the subsequent matters." Ānanda said: "What are the subsequent matters?" Aniruddha said: "While the World-Honoured One was in the world, we took the Buddha as teacher; after the World-Honoured One's extinction, whom shall we take as teacher? While the World-Honoured One was in the world, we dwelt relying on the World-Honoured One; after the World-Honoured One's extinction, relying on what shall we dwell? As for evil-natured monks, while the Buddha was in the world, the Buddha subdued them himself; after the Buddha's extinction, how shall they be subdued? To broadly benefit those who come later, it is fitting to compile [the teachings]; at the head of all sūtras, what words should be placed?" Ānanda received this instruction and consulted him on each one. Now the Commentary abbreviates and does not record the words of the inquiry, but only writes the response.
