Now this treatise clarifies that the mental entity of original enlightenment is by nature free from all thoughts. That it is cited here to explain the result-stage Buddha is because the entity of the result-stage Buddha is precisely original enlightenment, fundamentally free from thoughts by nature. Although cause and result are distinguished, being free from thoughts is without distinction; therefore, original enlightenment free from thoughts is precisely the Buddha's entity. Thus the sūtra says: "The cause of the Great Vehicle is the dharmatā of all phenomena," and so on. Therefore, when in bondage it is called original enlightenment; when out of bondage it is called ultimate enlightenment. The entity is one from beginning to end, with no other phenomenon. Hence the treatise says: "It is precisely the Tathāgata's equal Dharma body; relying on this Dharma body, it is termed original enlightenment."
