怖魔者。謂初出家日，飛行夜叉唱乃至魔宮聞故怖也。以一人出家展轉化度，損減眷屬故。然出家人從因至果三度怖魔。謂：出家時，發菩提心時，成正覺時。前二但怖，後乃興戈為佛所摧，莫不降伏。

"Frightening Māra": this means that on the day [one] first leaves home, the sky-faring yakṣas call out up to Māra's palace, and hearing it, [Māra] is frightened. This is because when a single person leaves home, [they] progressively convert and save others, thereby diminishing [Māra's] retinue. Moreover, a person who leaves home frightens Māra three times from the cause to the fruit: when leaving home, when giving rise to the mind of bodhi, and when attaining perfect enlightenment. At the first two, [Māra] is merely frightened, but at the last, he takes up weapons and is destroyed by the Buddha, none failing to be subdued.
