2.254

淨戒者。謂比丘二百五十戒，比丘尼五百戒，有表受，無表持，清淨持戒名為淨戒。有說五義，謂加淨命破惡。今以乞士即淨命、淨戒即破惡，故唯三也。

"Pure precepts": this refers to the two hundred and fifty precepts for a bhikṣu and the five hundred precepts for a bhikṣuṇī, which have manifest reception and unmanifest upholding; purely upholding the precepts is called pure precepts. Some explain five meanings, namely adding pure livelihood and destroying evil. Here, since mendicancy is itself pure livelihood and pure precepts is itself destroying evil, there are only three.
