3.86

一、正辨十八住處。疏中具列十八住名，略釋其義兼明對治十二種障，便指經文令知科段所屬。然每住經文，疏但略標三字五字，緣以經本科段首尾文勢稍重，恐言涉相濫，故不標最初之字，但取其次異文。亦不結終齊至何處，意在省約耳。向下隨文略敘首末，以隔前後。

First, directly discerning the eighteen abodes. The Commentary fully lists the names of the eighteen abodes, briefly explains their meanings, concurrently clarifies the antidotes to the twelve kinds of hindrances, and points to the sūtra text to make known to which topical division they belong. However, for the sūtra text of each abode, the Commentary only briefly marks three or five characters; because the textual phrasing at the beginning and end of the sūtra's original divisions is somewhat repetitive, fearing that the words might be conflated, it does not mark the very first characters, but only takes the distinctive text that follows. Nor does it conclude where it extends to, its intention being brevity. Below, following the text, we will briefly narrate the beginnings and endings to demarcate the preceding from the following.
