初句牒難。難云：「空生既問有次第，住修降伏宛分，何故經中不與別答，而寄住修中明耶？」

The first line takes up the objection. The objection says: "Since Subhūti asked with an order, wherein abiding, cultivation, and subduing are clearly distinguished, why does the sūtra not answer them separately, but instead explains them lodged within abiding and cultivation?"
